Cube - Sphere
Design Dynamics Introduction
IRD 101
PROCESS IN DRAWINGS
Step 1. Envisioning the sphere that will be created through the process of subtractive fabrication. Starting with a cube and finding the form of a sphere that is three inches in diameter.
Step 2. Drawing on the cube with a compass to visualize the cuts needed to achieve an accurately sized form. Between each cut, the form will be taped back together to set up for the next cut. This will create a solid platform to follow the template.
Step 3. Once all the cuts have been completed, now it is time to take apart the puzzle. The process will unravel many different shapes, leaving behind a tricylinder. This form is obtained from the intersection of three cylinders. The following stage is to finely shape this form into a sphere using a file and sandpaper.
Throughout this process of deriving a sphere from a cube, I have gained a new understanding of scale and proportion. I am now cognisant of the scale of an object or element in relation to other elements. Whether it be within the same frame, the scale and proportion of the work itself to its surroundings, and or in relation to the size of a human. I am more aware of how proportion affects the scale of specific design elements of a single object, including form, size, shape, and texture.
